It's a Math Story!

Watch this video by Ms. Formoso that includes a
special "mathy" twist on a popular Taylor Swift song!

Follow along with the lyrics shown below
(The chorus lyrics appear in the video.)

It was first grade when I first saw you,
I close my eyes, the flashback starts, I'm sitting there
In my little chair.
See the ones, see the twos and threes
See the fours, see the fives
So long ago.... little did I know

That you were math, you were my future
My daddy said stay away from counting on your fingers
Borrowing came next,
I was begging you please go slow....
And I said: (CHORUS)

I moved on; it was multiplication
Then on to the dread long division
Close my eyes; I can do this if I try.

You were math, you were my future
My daddy said stay away from counting on fingers
Algebra came next,
I was begging you please go slow...
And I said: (CHORUS)

Number line save me,
They try to tell me how to feel
The struggle's difficult, but it's real
Don't be afraid, I'll make it out of this mess
It's a math story
Everybody say YES.

I was calculating
Wondering, could the answer be found?
My faith in me was fading
When will I figure it out? (CHORUS)

And I said
Math, you're wonderful
I never have to be alone
I love you, and that's all I really know
You be the plus and I'll be the minus
It's a math story, everybody say.... YES

Special thanks to Mr. Rinker, Mr. Stewart, Mr. Costner, Ms. Formoso,

Let's Meet the 2010 Knowledge Masters Team!

The 2009-10 Knowledge Masters Team is lead by Ms. Burgos! They competed in a competition against other States and nations around the world! It was a grueling challenge of smarts and speed, and the Gunston team scored 1100. After the competition, they enjoyed a party to congratulate their accomplishment. If you are interested in joining Knowledge Masters, find Ms. Burgos!

5 Cool Questions: Part 5.

Teacher Number 5: Ms. Formoso.

1) Tell us, what is your favorite kind of music?
Well, I guess you could say I'm a Van Morrison FREAK. Find out how many other people have ever heard of him. Start with Mr. Costner and
you MIGHT get lucky.

2)What’s your favorite food?
Cuban food is REALLY good. Picadillo, Ropa Vieja, platanos, maduros, arroz con leche, frijoles negros, tostados, and too many more to mention.Of course cafe con leche.

3)Pets?
My standard poodle's name was "Tinta", (black ink in Spanish, but I guess maybe you knew that). I had to send her to my sister to live because every night when we came home from work, my husband would say "Can we get rid of the dog, can we get rid of the dog, can we get rid of the dog....."I got SICK of it. So she got a sedative and was put on a plane to Florida where she lived out her days happily with another dog, Bershey and two cats, Fluffy and Flash. She died a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of 15.

4)Favorite movie or T.V. show at the moment?
Hmmmmmm. At the moment. Well, at any moment, my favorite movie is "The Commitments" (again, ask Mr. Costner). But at the moment, I guess it would have to be the TV series "Mad Men." There's always "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report."

5)Favorite place?
A quiet place by a river where I can sit on a rock and listen to
the water rushing by.

5 Cool Questions!

Gunston T.V. decided to ask 7 of our favorite teachers the same 5 questions!
Here's what we found out!
Every Friday we will showcase a new teacher. Stay tuned.

Teacher #1: Mr. Stewart.

1) What is your favorite kind of music?

I appreciate talent; that is, I prefer to listen to anyone who is excellent at doing what they do. Check out Jerry Douglas on the dobro, Liz Phair or J. Mascis on the guitar, Stewart Copeland on the drums,Pharrel Williams on the mixer, the voices of Casey Dienel, Lykke Li, Leon Redbone, Natasha Khan, or Ghostface.

2) What's your favorite food?

I enjoy going to Afghani restaurants during Ramadan; I enjoy making gyoza during Chinese New Year (or latkes at Channukah); and I will forever eat Mike and Ikes.

3) Pets?

I think keeping animals as pets is an inhumane act; early domestication may have been a necessity for food and labor, yet centuries of breeding for hair color, size, and sound of bark has created entire species of ridiculous, neurotic, and uncomfortable animals. Say "No" to pets (unless, of course, you are rescuing one of these unfortunate life forms).

4) Favorite movie or T.V. show at the moment?

The Winter Olympics
Jersey Shore makes me weep for our world.

5) Favorite place?

Room G12
Long Branch Nature Center
Antalya, Turkey
Biloxi, MS

Remember to tune in next week for Teacher #2: Ms. Woodbury.

Apple Tablet Buzz! Written by Patrick M, Edited by Sarah W.

The Apple Tablet, a long rumored device from Apple, has been getting a lot of hype lately and the internet is on fire with rumors and buzz. Sites say everything from the tablet looking like a big iPhone to the "iSlate" causing a revolution communication. Quotes from Apple executives and former employees make the rumors all the more believable. The speculation of what this Tablet can do for the world is astounding. Some say it will revive print media, others say students of the future should all have one, and still others say that it will contribute to a decrease in television and radio ratings. Anything is possible for Apple and Steve Jobs, and his team always finds a way to outsmart everyone. The following sites have some juicy news and exciting previews of what should be an amazing step forward in technology. Apple wants to steal the thunder from the Consumer Electronics Show as other companies race to find a rival for the Tablet.
